" I've enjoyed my time at UBC so much. Everyone I have met has been super helpful and welcoming. My advisor and lab have been super great with helping me get started. The campus is so beautiful and full of positive energy. I can't wait to see more of campus once I can. "

" UBCO CS faculty lacks some core courses. We don't have a compiler course, which is kind of ridiculous. Also, we don't have a programming language theory course, which is provided by UBCV since their CPSC 110. I heard from the OS professor that the department once decided to cut off the OS course altogether...
Future students, if you want to be a code monkey and just find a programmer job, you are lucked out. You don't need to do boring theoretical stuff, which afaik UBCV provides plenty. For people who are ambitious and want to be the next Dijkstra, there are many things that the current curriculum is lacking. If you want to be a really good programmer, I have some advice for you so you don't need to waste time:
1. Our current curriculum is far from enough to help you understand computer science as a whole. If you don't care about theory, at least one thing you need to do is to find some compiler course materials online, study them as seriously as you treat other courses. If you think about a programming language, it's really syntax + semantics + implementation. If you understanding the implementation part, even a little bit, a lot of questions will not be a question at all.
2. Learn some programming language theory. Programming language is really the bread and butter. Code we write reflect thoughts we make,
3. Be aware of what knowledge is domain-specific and what can be universally applied. CS has many branches, but some knowledge should be held by everybody. Take some examples: machine learning is domain-specific. Even if it's hyping nowadays, it's just a branch of so many other things you can do with a computer. There were famous AI winters throughout the 70s to 90s, where many CS departments cut down the funding or even cut off the department of AI research because of the lack of progress. On the other hand, algorithms are something that can be universally applied. Good algorithm knowledge will help you structure efficient code and being able to reason about it, no matter what you need to write. It's not a problem if you don't do ML, but it's a problem if you have no idea about algorithms.
4. Algorithm data structures are something everybody should start as early as possible. Sometimes is hard to tell if you really understand an algorithm. Rule of thumb: implement it.
5. For UBCO specific: take more math. You can totally get honor in CS with a math minor. If you plan nicely you can even get a double major. To write top-notch stuff, you will inevitably read papers on your domain. Good math maturity will only boost you. Our campus has lots of resources on optimization problems. Linear programming etc. "

" Excellent campus for research opportunities with approachable professors. I've had many opportunities for research and volunteering, I just had to reach out to professors and grad students. The campus daycare is absolutely incredible, though the wait list is very long. If you're considering UBC Okanagan, get your kids on the waitlist as soon as possible. "

" - Definitely join a club or student association! I made some life-long friends at one!
- Get a bike or a skateboard because it will aid in getting you from building to building in between classes, because sometimes you will have one class in one building and your next class in another building all the way across campus with only ten minutes to get there "

" Overall a great school for anyone who wants to go to a top university in Canada and live in Vancouver. As an international student from the US I found that it was lacking in the "traditional college experiences" with football games, and parties, and social groups on campus. But that's also the beauty of UBC that you can really make anything out of it you want, and that with the right group of friends it really does just feel like you're a YA living in Vancouver experiencing all the city + surrounding area has of offer.
