" This may not be applicable to everyone, but as a mature student I have no interest in the social aspects of school life. I'm looking for training for my career which, oftentimes feels like a secondary aim for this school. Encouraging social exploration and participation is well and good, but it sometimes comes at the expense of my own education. This is probably applicable to many schools because the overwhelming demographic is young people and the social aspect of school and the necessity of practicing networking makes these social aspects important. " I'm really enjoying my experience here :) It's a small campus, and while that was a downfall for me in the beginning, it ended up really growing on me. You get a strong sense of community and everyone is really friendly. "

" Wonderful school with professors who care. If you enjoy a small campus then this is perfect as almost all the buildings are connected. I never joined any extracurricular groups but there were quite a few societies available. I graduated with good marks and a solid network made of my peers and professors. "

" I love this school because of its small campus and small class sizes. It has a good community and my professors have all been amazing. You will never be late getting from one class to another because all of the classes are on one campus! The library is pretty good and has quiet floors for studying. The university is close to downtown Halifax so it's easy to get around with a lot of good bus routes. "

" There are many things I like about SMU including the community feel and the support at student services. There are many great profs, classes, and opportunities.
I am a PhD student and I had to deal with bullying/harassment/discrimination which was terrifying; it involved my two former supervisors and one of the secretaries spreading rumours, discouraging people from working with me, and trying to get me in trouble (they tried to drum up complaints, and when they couldn't get them, made them up). I used to live under security cameras and keep records of witnesses in order to protect myself. A part-time academic from my department (Psych) went on hunger strike in 2018 outside the university to try to raise awareness for the issue. I was discouraged from reporting it and seeking redress, and I had no help from the conflict resolution officer, who actually ganged up and became a perpetrator. It was horrible, and if you're considering graduate studies please take the time to learn about academic mobbing. "
