" Good university located in a major city. Lots of connections to the community which helps students find jobs. Attended as a PhD student - not a ton of social support from the department but the administration is great about providing answers to questions about the program or degree requirements. "

" The campus was very nice as were the majority of people. The classes and work are difficult and require a lot of time management skills and intellect. It is a quite competitive school as well so on initial application it is hard to get into the college however transferring is widely done from the people I have spoken with. "

" I am a Third-Year student here. If you're interested in studying Industrial Design, and you want to reside in Texas, I think this is the place to do it. It's a brutal degree, much like architecture, but this is to be expected. The staff in the ID program are excellent, barring a few exceptions in ID elective courses (hence 4 stars instead of 5). You will likely have to leave town to find design internships or a job. Regarding the campus, facilities are pretty good. During the winter, the whole city tends to suffer infrastructure issues, which includes the University. During the Summer, the occasional tropical storm causes similar issues. We're talking power outages, water outages, dangerous driving conditions, etc. (hence 3 stars). Sometimes this is nice, because, if the problem is widespread enough, the University will cease operations until the issue in question is resolved. Security. The campus is shaped like a box. If you're inside the box, you can bet you're pretty safe. UHPD is sharp; 99.7% chance you'll have a totally uneventful day. As soon as you start leaving campus, however, your sense of safety will rapidly decline. If you move north and west of campus, you enter the Third Ward, which is where you will feel most unsafe. The south is largely uneventful, since the campus is bordered by a railyard and remote parking in that direction. Note that police activity is very low there. To the east, it's mostly well-kept campus property until you reach I-45. I-45 acts as a wall to pedestrian traffic, so, you won't really run into people going either way. Another aspect of the campus is administrative staff. Most staff are *exceptionally* polite and friendly, more so than should be expected (hence 4 stars). Look no further than the dining or cleaning staff for shining examples of kindness. Alternatively, UH Parking Services are comprised of pure evil; be wary of their watchful gaze. They'll smite you with a parking ticket any chance they get. Note that parking in general is very expensive here. I don't know too much about sports facilities, though, I know many people who utilize them regularly. I only hear good things. Nothing bad. Social scene is okay. I can't say I know a lot of exotic places to go around here, and I can't say I've really utilized them either. I mean, remember that I am an ID major, we don't get to do much fun stuff in the Architecture Department. Take note that Galveston beach is only an hour and a half away though, if you take I-45 South. Some other interesting places I know of are the Houston MFA, Houston Zoo, Arboretum, and a nice ramen shop near campus. "

" School is developing and improving, but the engineering building needs a lot work. This is also a commuter school so I wouldn't expect much campus activity on the weekends. If you study engineering, I suggest you join the student organizations......there are lots of networking and resources that are helpful. "

" The University of Houston was a good school; it taught a lot of independence due to how large the school is. Parking was a pain, but the buses to get to classes run on a tight schedule and well! The football games were cool because it was always free. I also enjoyed the gym, it had all the equipment I needed. "
